Parker: Always a Hub

Beginning in 1860, the community began with a little old shack called Twenty Mile House for a stage stop. As it grew into a 10-room inn under the ownership of namesake James Sample Parker, it became a major stopping point for the railroad. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the bank was robbed, railroad tracks were washed out, and low prices in the produce market almost destroyed the village. As Denver grew southward, to avoid being annexed, Parker incorporated with 285 residents in 1981. Today the population approaches 60,000.

All the while, the community pushes to maintain its small-town atmosphere and beautiful rural areas. It pulled together an exemplary sense of teamwork and volunteerism even while adopting a pro-business attitude. Technology and creativity make Parker what it is today.

The Douglas County School District places children as top priority and it shows. The County has the highest level of test grades in the state and is rated second in the nation for its programs. It offers charter schools and innovative program such as partnering with area universities to allow high school students to earn college credit. Private schools include a Montessori school, three parochial grade schools, and a parochial high school.
